Sam Peterson joined Buyers Edge Platform (BEP) as Chief Technology Officer on October 12, 2026, stepping into a role focused on AI-enabled product development and faster delivery of procurement solutions for foodservice operators, distributors, and manufacturers.
The Appointment
Peterson's hire comes as BEP continues to scale a digital procurement network that the company says touches more than $100 billion in annual purchasing across 350,000 foodservice locations — a data footprint that makes AI tooling increasingly consequential for how operators manage food costs, track supply chain performance, and benchmark spending. BEP's portfolio includes its Digital Procurement Network, Fresh Services, Software Solutions, and Supply Chain Management division, all of which will fall under Peterson's technology and engineering oversight.
John Davie, CEO of BEP, cited Peterson's combination of deep engineering experience and demonstrated AI transformation work as key to the hire. "His leadership will be instrumental as we continue to innovate across our platform and help the foodservice industry operate smarter," Davie said.
Background and Experience
Peterson brings a career spanning public companies, private equity-backed businesses, and international teams. Most recently he served as CTO at Renaissance Inc., a philanthropic-services fintech, where he rebuilt engineering around AI-first delivery and stood up an AI Governance Council to manage responsible adoption at scale. Prior roles included executive technology and product leadership positions at Truckstop, Metrc, and Boats Group, where he led platform consolidation and international acquisition integration that supported a successful exit. Earlier in his career, Peterson spent 14 years at Overstock.com, rising from its first software developer to Senior Vice President and CTO of a 650-person technology, product, and program organization.
For the foodservice procurement space, Peterson's data-platform experience is particularly relevant. "Having built data products at Boats Group and Truckstop, I know what it takes to turn marketplace data into customer value," he said, pointing to BEP's purchasing visibility as "the richest foundation I've had to work with."
What It Means for Operators
For foodservice operators and the dealers and consultants who support back-of-house buildouts, procurement technology is becoming as critical as the equipment itself. AI-driven spend analytics can inform equipment-replacement cycles, flag pricing anomalies on consumables, and surface supply chain vulnerabilities before they affect kitchen operations. BEP's scale — aggregating purchasing data across hundreds of thousands of locations — positions the platform to deliver benchmarking and predictive insights that individual operators or even mid-size chains cannot replicate independently.
The appointment signals that group purchasing organizations and digital procurement networks are investing heavily in engineering talent as the foodservice industry's adoption of AI-driven back-of-house tools accelerates. For operators evaluating procurement platforms alongside capital equipment decisions, the competitive differentiation increasingly lies in data sophistication and integration depth rather than contract breadth alone. Coverage of related dealer-channel technology trends continues to show demand for procurement solutions that connect directly with equipment specification and lifecycle management workflows.
