Kerry Group's new coffee extraction facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania officially opened September 30, giving East Coast foodservice operators and beverage brands closer access to the company's advanced hot and cold brew extraction capabilities — and doing so without requiring operators to invest in on-site espresso or cold-brew equipment.
The site is Kerry's first Pennsylvania manufacturing location, announced in September 2025 and designed specifically for coffee extraction, concentration, and thermal processing at commercial scale. Independent hot and cold brew extraction lines are built to expand as customer demand grows, a design choice that signals Kerry's confidence in the continuing premiumization of the U.S. coffee market.
What the Plant Produces
The facility applies Kerry's proprietary extraction and thermal processing technologies to produce natural, formulation-specific coffee ingredients for a wide range of end applications: ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee beverages, alcoholic drinks, ice cream, and savory sauces. Its High-Brix concentration process — operating in the 23–30 Brix range — allows finished concentrates to ship at ambient temperature rather than refrigerated, which Kerry says delivers 34% lower carbon compared to refrigerated Brix products and 40% lower carbon compared to conventional competitor coffee offerings. Batches using Direct Concentrated Fresh (DCF) beans carry a 61% lower carbon footprint than standard alternatives.
For foodservice operators, the practical implication is meaningful: operators can launch full craft coffee programs — iced lattes, espresso-style beverages, cold brew, and functional drinks — using Kerry's shelf-stable concentrates without barista training or the capital outlay of installing dedicated espresso equipment, grinders, or cold-brew towers. That positions the facility squarely within the back-of-house efficiency conversation happening across foodservice equipment and kitchen design right now, as operators look to reduce labor complexity while still offering premium coffee experiences.
Market Timing and Sustainability Standards
The plant opens into a market showing record specialty-coffee consumption. The National Coffee Association reports that 48% of American adults drank specialty coffee in the past day, outpacing traditional coffee at 39% — a category high. A 2026 analysis by dunnhumby, covering more than 50 million shoppers, found consumers continuing to trade up to higher-quality coffee including RTD formats even as prices rise.
On the sourcing side, the Bethlehem facility will use ingredients aligned with USDA Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and Café Femenino standards — certifications that are increasingly requested by food and beverage operators managing sustainability mandates across their supply chains.
John Cahalane, President & CEO of Kerry North America, framed the opening in operational terms: "It brings additional capacity and advanced processing capabilities closer to customers on the East Coast, helping them respond quickly to changing consumer preferences across hot and cold coffee… it gives us greater flexibility to develop high-quality coffee experiences while identifying opportunities to reduce supply chain complexity and environmental impact."
The ribbon-cutting ceremony drew customers, industry partners, government officials, and community leaders, including Pennsylvania DCED Secretary Rick Siger, Northampton County Executive Tara Zrinski, and Congressman Ryan Mackenzie — a sign of the facility's significance to the Lehigh Valley's manufacturing economy as well as to the specialty-coffee supply chain.
